Every time there is a threat of heavy rains and flooding, we hear or read messages from social media that a certain dam will release water and make the Marikina River swell and bring floods or flash floods to Marikina and nearby areas.
However, this is not entirely true.
There’s only one dam along the Mairkina Watershed, the Wawa Dam. But this has already been decommissioned.
According to Wikipedia:
It was built in 1909 during the American colonial era to provide the water needs for Manila. It used to be the only source of water for Manila until Angat Dam was built and Wawa was abandoned.
The nearest dam in Marikina River aside from Wawa Dam is the Lamesa Dam. However, Lamesa Dam will not be able to bring flood waters to Marikina because its stream or discharge channels flows in a different area.
Meanwhile, the Ipo Dam is located about 7.5 kilometres downstream of the Angat Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan province. It was a part of the Angat-Ipo-La Mesa water system.
Rain and flood waters are coming from: Boso-Boso, Mt. Aries, Mt. Oroin Rizal Province.
So when you get messages saying that Wawa dam or Lamesa Dam will release water and Marikina will be affected, you now know that THIS IS NOT TRUE.
