Marikina History: Plebiscite converts Marikina into a City


On December 7, 1996, a plebiscite was held that ratified Republic Act 8223, turning the Municipality of Marikina into a City.

It was reported by Manila Standard the following day that only 40% of Marikenyos voted (I was not yet a voter).

On December 8, 1996, Marikina was officially declared a City. And every year, we celebrate the Cityhood of Marikina.
